NATIONAL BAKED ALASKA DAY

BAKED ALASKA DAY

NATIONAL BAKED ALASKA DAY! Today we celebrate the famous dessert created in 1867 to welcome Alaska as a new territory to the United States. The baked meringue dessert also known as a Norwegian omelette, omelette surprise, and glace au four meaning ice cream in the oven. was created by Delmonico’s Restaurant in New York City. The earlier recipes used pie crusts instead of meringue. And for the more skilled chefs used blowtorches to brown the meringue instead of baking it in the oven. Who wants to celebrate Baked Alaska Day with today?

NATIONAL HEDGEHOG DAY! Today we celebrate the 200 year old tradition, observed by the Romans, of the Hedgehog, not the Groundhog, coming out of his hole and looking for his shadow. if the Hedgehog saw his shadow in the light of the moon he would go back inside his cozy burrow and lay low for 6 more weeks of winter. It’s not that we are trying to take the spotlight away from our favorite little Groundhogs who usually predict the fate of winter for us, we are only just reminding you that these adorable little Hedgehogs had this job first. In fact, this year, Phoebe the official Hedgehog from Manchester Connecticut, is filling in for Chuckles the groundhog who sadly passed this October. Who’s going to celebrate Hedgehog Day with us? NATIONAL BUBBLE GUM DAY

BUBBLE GUM DAY

NATIONAL BUBBLE GUM DAY! The holiday was created by the Children’s book author Ruth Spiro, who came up with the idea to help raise money for school activities.  Students would be allowed to chew bubble gum in class for a donation of 50 cents. The ideas was to teach children about ways to raise money for charitable causes. But this holiday wouldn’t be possible without Walter E Diemer, for his  Bubble Gum creation In 1928. Walter was 23 at the time, an accountant for the Fleer Chewing Gum Company in Philadelphia when he starting experimenting with gum recipes in his spare time. The bubbles were an accident, he told the Lancaster Intelligencer, he was actually working on something else. And Pink became the color because it was the only food coloring he had on hand. With the enthusiasm of his invention he went on to teach his salesmen how to blow bubbles for marketing the gum. Who wants to Celebrate Bubble gum Day with us?

GUMDROP DAY

NATIONAL GUMDROP DAY! Today we celebrate our favorite chewy treats. We first learned about gumdrops in the 19th century. Percy Trusdale is said to be the original inventor of these yummy candies. The first ones were made from gelatin and sugar and had the consistency of gummies. Later starch was added to the recipe. In 1850 the first recorded ad about gumdrops appears in the Illinois State Chronicle by a candy shop owner named George Julier. The traditional flavors of gumdrops were spice, clove, allspice, anise, spearmint, cinnamon and wintergreen. They were popular around Christmas time and were used for decorating cakes, cupcakes, and gingerbread houses. Today the most popular gumdrop flavors are fruity flavors like cherry, grape, orange, and lemon. Gumdrops got its name from the NASA Apollo Command modules, of all places, who named them because of their conical shape. And last but not least, we can’t forget about Gumdrop Mountain from our favorite board game Candy Land. Who wants to celebrate Gumdrop Day with us today? What’s your favorite flavor?
