NATIONAL MUTT DAY This holiday was created in 2005 by Celebrity Pet and Family Lifestyle Expert and Animal Welfare Advocate Colleen Paige to celebrate mixed breed dogs by either adopting or volunteering at a shelter. With over 3 million dogs being dumped at shelters each year we need to spread the word and help find forever homes for these beautiful animals. The holiday is also celebrated July 31st

Dexter and okie celebrate national cookie day

COOKIE DAY

NATIONAL COOKIE DAY! The name “cookie” comes from the Dutch word “koekie” which means little cake. But it’s not the Europeans who invented our favorite treat, it’s the Persians who started producing cookies in the 7th century. They later became popular in Europe and then came to America in the 17th Century. Although Gingerbread and Macaroons were the first cookies baked in America, today we celebrate all cookies. Who wants to bake and munch away with us ?

SACHER TORTE

NATIONAL SACHER TORTE DAY!  Also know as Sacher torte, this is an Austrian Chocolate cake invented by Franz Sacher in 1832. When he was an apprentice chef at the ripe age of 16 he made a this desert for Prince Wenzel Von Metternich which became world famous. His son Eduard then went on to perfect the famous dessert by placing apricot jam between a chocolate sponge cake. He then layered it with chocolate icing. The original recipe remains a secret today and is served only at the Sacher Hotels in Vienna Salzburg. Who wants to eat Sacher Torte with us today?

COTTON CANDY DAY

NATIONAL COTTON CANDY DAY! Did you know cotton candy is also known as candy floss or fairy floss? Cotton Candy has been around since the 18th century. The cotton candy machine was later invented in 1897 by a Dentist, William a Morrison and a confectioner John C Wharton. They became known for their invention and popularized cotton candy in 1904 at the World Fair in St Louis. They sold it in colorful little boxes for 25 cents a box. Who wants to snack on yummy cotton candy today?

Chocolate Brownies are the favorite for Americans with Blonde Brownies being a close Second. Legend had it that a woman in Bangor Maine created the original recipe. NATIONAL GINGERBREAD HOUSE DAY! According to historians making Gingerbread houses started in the 1800’s and was inspired by the Grimm’s FairyTale story Hansel and Gretel. And in 17th century only professional bakers were permitted to bake gingerbread with the exception of Christmas and Easter. And now that everyone can make these cute little edible houses who wants to make one with us? What fun!

MAPLE SYRUP DAY

HAPPY NATIONAL MAPLE SYRUP DAY! This yummy syrup that comes from the xylem sap from sugar, red, and black maple trees are tapped by making holes into trees do that the sap can drip into barrels. The sap is then processed by heating it up and evaporating the water. It was the Native Americans who developed this process and then taught the European settlers. Today Canada is the largest producer of Maple syrup around the world and Vermont is the largest producer of Maple Syrup for the United States. A fun way to celebrate is to go to a sugaring off party and indulge with fresh syrup poured on a bowl of fresh snow. Yum yum. Who wants to celebrate with us today? IT’S NATIONAL HARD CANDY DAY! Hard candy has been around since the seventeenth century when sugar prices dropped but it became popularized by the mid 1800’s. We make hard candy by boiling sugar to 320 degrees till it turns into a syrup. Then the fun begins when we took it and shape it and add colors and flavors to make it as yummy as can be. NATIONAL CANDY CANE DAY HAPPY NATIONAL CANDY CANE DAY! Did you that candy canes originated in Cologne Germany? Legend had it they date back to 1670 when a choirmaster at the Cologne Cathedral shaped candied into shepherds crooks and handed them out to children to keep them quiet during the ceremony. The tradition spread to the United States. But it wasn’t until the 1920’s when they became popularized by Bob McCormack who started making them for his own children and local shops in Albany Georgia. And later in 1950 Bob’s brother-in-law invented a candy cane machine and started the production nationwide. Who wants to celebrate this holiday treat with us?
