But Popcorn didn’t become popular in the US until the 1800’s,. It was a candy store owner, Charles Cretors, who took an interest in the fluffy kernels that inspired him to invent a popping machine. Popcorn took off in the 1900’s when he paraded the streets of Chicago selling the snacks in his horse drawn popcorn wagons. But the popcorn inventions didn’t stop there. In 1908 there was yet another invention – Cracker Jacks. Louise Ruckeim came up with the brilliant idea to add molasses and peanuts to the corn. NATIONAL PEANUT BUTTER DAY! Did you know peanut butter was originally made for people who had no teeth? And women and children prefer creamy peanut butter over men who like it chunky? it takes 540 peanuts to make a 12 oz jar of peanut butter? And it takes 5 gallons of water to produce just one ounce of peanuts? And if you took all the peanut butter Americans consume over a hear you could smother the floor of the Grand Canyon. That said unlike Americans, Europeans on average consume less than one tablespoon of peanut butter a year. Peanut Butter the popular snack was patented in Montreal, Quebec by a man named Marcellus Gilmore Edson in 1884. But it was the Aztecs and Incas who deserve all the credit for inventing this popular treat. Edson was responsible for making a peanut paste by milling roasted peanuts between two hot plates. In 1895 Kellogg patented the process with raw peanuts  Dr. Straub patented a peanut butter making machine in 1903. And before we leave let’s not forget, peanuts are not nuts but legumes. Now that you’re an expert on the most important things we need to know about peanut butter, who wants to celebrate with us today?

NATIONAL CHOCOLATE CAKE DAY

Add Your Heading Text Here

NATIONAL CHOCOLATE CAKE DAY! As our friend Charles Dickens once said: “There is nothing better than a friend, unless it is a friend with chocolate.” Whether you like German Chocolate cake, Black Forest cake, or Chocolate Lava Cake, they are all chocolate cakes. The story of how we came from chocolate beverages for the rich to chocolate cake for the masses started with a man named Dr James Baker. It was Mr. Baker who founded the process of grinding cocoa beans between to circular millstones to make a powder. In 1879 Rodolphe Lindt took the powder one step further with his invention of conching which is a method used to smooth the chocolate into a silky texture. This became popular for glazes and fillings in cakes. Then in 1886 some American bakers began experimenting with chocolate by adding it to cake batters. But the chocolate cake phenomenon didn’t really take off till the 1930’s. It was the duff Company of Pittsburg who had the brilliant idea of introducing a Devil Food Chocolate Cake Mix, and then Duncan Hines jumped on the band wagon with a “Three Star Special “with white, yellow and chocolate cake batters. Today our choices are endless whether we make them from scratch or buy them in a box. Who wants to celebrate chocolate cake with us today? What’s your favorite kind of chocolate cake? We think they always taste better with a strawberry on top?

INTERNATIONAL ZEBRA DAY

INTERNATIONAL ZEBRA DAY

On January 31 we celebrate International Zebra Day to spread awareness about our black and white striped friends, who live in the African semi deserts of  Kenya, Ethiopia, Namibia, Angola and south Africa. Did you know that no two Zebras have the same pattern? Each one wears their own dazzling unique design. But what’s even more interesting is that researchers just learned that their beautiful black stripes serve another purpose other than good looks. The black hairs on the Zebra actually contains heat  and helps the zebra stay warm at night. And then during the hot days, the black hairs stand erect to release some of that and cool the zebra down. How awesome is that? So who wants to celebrate Zebras with us today? What do you think we should do?
