PIG DAY
NATIONAL PIG DAY! Every March 1rst we celebrate our beautiful intelligent friend the Pig. Pigs are one of the smartest animals around after the Chimpanzee, elephant, dolphin and whale. They are similar to dogs and can be taught tricks and they make great pets. Unfortunately they have not been given the respect they deserve. This holiday was started in 1972 by two sisters Ellen Stanley, a teacher in Texas and Mary Lynne Rave from Beaufort North Carolina to bring recognition to this smart loveable animal. One way to honor National Pig Day is to avoid eating bacon and pork for the day and think about ruling it out for good. National Pig day is celebrated at schools, local community groups, farms and zoos. Who wants to pay tribute to the pig and celebrate with us today?

NATIONAL CHEESE DOODLE DAY! Who doesn’t love these crazy orange crunchy cheese snacks? If you’re wondering if you ever had cheese doodle fingers, just remember the last time your fingers were coated with orange dust from snacking. Although the original cheese doodles were created by accident by More Yohai, the son of the owner of Old London Foods in the Bronx, NYC, in 1948, it was a Janitor named Richard Montanez who invented the Flaming Hot Cheetos after being inspired by a street vendor. And who would have guessed that Cheese Doodles were a favorite of the famous Julia Child? Rumor has it 15 million pounds of cheese doodles are produced each year so we better pitch in and help consume these yummy snacks. Who’s going to celebrate with us today? And if you’re worried about the health benefits or calories just remember everything in moderation is ok.

OREO COOKIE DAY
NATIONAL OREO COOKIE DAY! Let’s wish Oreo Cookies a big Happy Birthday! March 6th, 1912 is their birthday. These chocolate sandwich cookies with a cream filling on the inside were manufactured by the Nabisco Factory in New York City. These yummy cookies can be found in over 100 countries around the world and they are all made exactly the same. Each cookie has 90 ridges, 12 flowers and 12 dots according to Spoon University. And if that’s not enough they are baked at 400 degrees F from above and 300 degrees F from below at exactly 290.6 seconds. The brand went though a few changes over the years. The original flavor was Lemon Meringue but that was eventually dropped in the 1920’s. And if you love these cookies as much as we do you better stay away if you’re on a diet. Did you know that they are really addictive? There was a study conducted in 2013 that suggests the the fats and sugars in these cookies are just as addictive as psychoactive drugs like cocaine. Well now that you know the facts who wants to celebrate Oreo Cookie with us today?

CEREAL DAY
NATIONAL CEREAL DAY! Cereal day was created in the late 1800’s to promote a healthy meatless breakfast. Pork and beef used to be the favorite wake up meal. Dr. James changed that by creating a nutritional bran nugget for the morning. But the problem is that was that his creation was so dense that it was hard to swallow. People had to soak it over night to digest it. Then Dr. John Kellogg came around and created a a wheat flake which was easier to digest and much lighter and that’s when corn flakes were born. But 1939 was the real game changer when sugar took over the healthy snack. A new cereal called Ranger Joe Popped Wheat Honnie was born which was loaded with sugar and marketed to kids. For those of us who can remember watching Saturday morning cartoons on television, it was hard to resist all the fun characters associated with sugary sweet cereal. What’s your favorite cereal and who’s your favorite character?

SAVE A SPIDER DAY
NATIONAL SAVE A SPIDER DAY! “With the right words you can change the world” E.B. White, Charlotte’s Web. March 14 marks National Save a Spider Day. Today we should start to look at spiders in a new light, and admire their beautiful strong decorative webs, and their beautiful colors and long dainty legs. Spiders have gotten a bad reputation in the United States and all over the world. People are often wrongly fearful of them and blame them for nasty bites. But in fact, a study in the journal of Medical Entomology has proven that most perceived spider bites, infections and allergic reactions are commonly misdiagnosed. We need to give or eight legged friends another chance so let’s begin with some positive facts like, spiders are mostly vegetarian, some spiders can produce silk, females spiders can lay up to 3,000 eggs at one time, and our favorite spider Charlotte, from E.B. White’s Charlotte Web, managed to save our favorite pig Wilbur from being slaughtered for Christmas dinner. So who wants to celebrate National Save a Spider Day with us today?

PANDA DAY
NATIONAL PANDA DAY! Every March 16th we celebrate these beautiful white and black bears who are the pride and joy of China. Unfortunately these magnificent creatures are an endangered species with less than 2000 of them left in the wild. To make matters worse they only live for about 15 to 20 years in the wild and a little longer in captivity. One reason contributing to their low numbers is their low birth rate. Pandas are only fertile a few days per year. Pandas spend a lot of time eating each day. And since an adult female panda can weigh over 200 pounds she needs a lot of Bamboo to survive. So one way of helping preserve these beautiful bears is to protect the bamboo forests so the bears will have enough to eat and somewhere safe to live. Pandas can clime as high as 13,000 feet. They are also amazing swimmers. And if you happen to live near a Bamboo forest, don’t worry cause the pandas don’t tend to wander into human neighborhoods. Who wants to celebrate National Panda Day with us and spread the word about these amazing animals?

ST PATRICKS
NATIONAL ST PATRICKS DAY! Let’s celebrate a holiday that dates back 1500 Years marking the Anniversary of the death of St Patrick. Some say he was banished by snakes but that’s hard to believe since Ireland isn’t known to have any snakes. Leprechauns and Shamrocks, beer and parades are always associated to this festive holiday, and believe it or not the first St Patrick’s parade was held in 1601 in a Spanish Colony we now know as Florida. This year most celebrations will probably happen virtually because of the Pandemic. But we can still have a beer and toast to the day. Who wants to celebrate with us a today?

RAVIOLI DAY
NATIONAL RAVIOLI DAY! We celebrate Ravioli Day every March 20th to honor the yummy filled pastas sealed between two layers of thin dried dough, filled with a cheese, beef, or vegetable delight. It’s usually topped with tomato, vegetable or beef sauce. We first learned of this dish from a merchant of Venice, in the 14th century, by a gentleman named Francesco. But there are other forms of Ravioli found from around the world, one popular form of Ravioli is found in India, called a Guijya. However, this dish is a sweet version instead of savory. It’s filled with dry fruits, sugar, sweet spices, and then deep fried in vegetable oil. And to make matters more interesting there is even a Ravioli Guinness World Record competition. The last one I heard of took place in 2013. It was won in St. Petersburg Russia, making a Ravioli that that was 96 feet and 1 inch long. So who wants to eat Ravioli with us today?

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE SEAL
INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE SEAL! Today we celebrate our little pinnipeds, meaning the pin footed marine mammals, related to the walrus and sea lions. Interestingly, scientists tell us that these sea mammals are descendants of bears, weasels, raccoons, skunks and red pandas, having diverged about 50 million years ago. These beautiful creatures spend most of their time in cold water but they come ashore to mate, give birth, molt, or escape from predators like sharks and killer whales. these poor animals were relentlessly hunted and kept in captivity to perform tricks, used for their fur, or food. Now, with many species under threat of becoming endangered or extinct, they are protected. Who wants to celebrate this day and hang out with the seals?

Brief History:
International Waffle Day began in Sweden and is now celebrated worldwide. Interestingly, its origins are not solely culinary but also have ties to the world of patents! On March 25th, 1869, Cornelius Swartwout was awarded the first U.S. patent for a waffle iron. His design, with its innovative handle and clasp, made it easier for households to craft their own waffles, leading to its beloved status in breakfast menus around the world.
Fun Fact:
While today’s waffle makers are electric, Swartwout’s original design was meant to be used over an open flame. Talk about rustic cooking! 🔥🧇

PICK UP YOUR PHONE AND CALL DAY
NATIONAL PICK UP YOUR PHONE AND CALL DAY! Today, March 26th, marks a brand new holiday “Pick up the Phone and Call Day”, started by the podcast Death, Sex and Money with the help of the Brian Lehrer Show in NYC. This is a lovely holiday to remind us to connect with someone special in our life, be-it an old friend, a family member, someone we once knew well but haven’t spoken to, a neighbor we like but only see on the streets, a distant cousin, and so on. The holiday was inspired by the isolation many of us ate experiencing through this pandemic. Even though we’ve been zooming and texting throughout this pandemic, it’s not the same as hearing someone’s voice in person and getting that special call to hear them say they’ve been thinking of us. So the next person who pops I you our head who we have fond memories of, let’s make the commitment to pick up the phone and give them a call. Who will you call today? We can’t wait to hear how it went.
